One of the active ingredients in milk thistle seeds responsible for improving liver function is the flavonoid complex silymarin. Silymarin works

  • As an antioxidant – neutralizes the effects of free radicals. Studies show ten times greater antioxidant activity than vitamin E.
  • It increases glutathione peroxidase (a powerful antioxidant in the body). Glutathione is responsible for the detoxification of hormones, medications, toxins, and other chemical compounds.
  • Stimulates protein synthesis in the liver, which results in increased liver cell regeneration – the liver is able to regenerate faster and more efficiently.
  • It limits the synthesis of leukotrienes (inflammatory substances).
